Problems
for which Impeachment is probably
NOT the remedy:
(Not
everything rises to the level of "High Crimes & Misdemeanors")
First, let me be clear, I am opinionated and believe that the current incarnation
of the Republican Party is a subversion of the American political
process with the distinct goal of altering our government to represent,
and act in, the interests of a very small group with extreme,
self-centered, economic and religious views and who are not concerned
with adhering to the democratic process as we've known it for over 200
years (it began with the Watergate "plumbers" and has only gotten
worse). It is not
your daddy's Republican
Party and traditional Republican conservatives (such as Barry
Goldwater - when he was alive- and John Dean today) did, and do, advocate a
very different philosophy than is currently evident in the GOP.
President Bush
& Vice-President Cheney should not be impeached for:
- Gutting the CIA, DIA, and NSA of
independently minded
analysts and replacing them with administration-friendly dupes to
provide support
for their preconceptions.
- Ignoring informed military
advice regarding the Iraq
war (beginning with Gen. Eric K. Shinseki and continuing with many
others)
including the results of war games from 1999 demonstrating that SecDef
Rumsfeld’s 2003 invasion plan was disastrously ill-conceived.
- Allowing U.S. troops to be
committed to combat in the
absence of an exculpatory emergency with ‘the army they
had’ rather than ‘the
army they needed’ and for allowing SecDef Rumsfeld to
arrogantly dismiss their
concerns regarding their safety without remonstrance.
- Creating a National Debt that
will burden our
children and their children while putting the nation into hock to China
and
others who hold our debt but whose concerns are not our national well-being.
- Denying and lying to the
American public about the
nature and threat of Global Warming and failing to begin taking even
the most
rudimentary steps to preserve civilization as we know it for the future.
- Being the world’s
largest arms supplier thus
contributing to the largest, ongoing, human rights violation in history
- the
use of small arms in third-world conflicts.
- Demanding other nations give up
terrorists to U.S.
jurisdiction but refusing to give up convicted terrorists and indicted
human
rights abusers (José
L. Carillos & Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada) to face justice in the
countries
having jurisdiction.
- Failing to aggressively pursue a
solution to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a wider Mideast peace policy thereby
raising
the threat of violence worldwide.
- Relying, without exception, to a
narrow
neoconservative voice in the execution of our foreign affairs and
ignoring
valid informed opinions advocating other courses of action.
- Failing to adhere to previous
treaties and agreements
such as the ABM treaty and the NPT agreements, for advocating the
development and
possible use of new nuclear weapons, for assisting India (an NPT
non-signatory)
in expanding its nuclear capabilities, for renouncing the “no
first-use” policy
on nuclear weapons thereby making the world a more dangerous place, by
announcing (and implementing) a policy of pre-emptive war based on the
paranoid
delusion of the 1% doctrine, and for beginning the militarization of
space.
- Failing to pursue Osama bin
Laden in Afghanistan and
failing to support the nascent democracy there and, instead,
transferring troops
& material to attack Iraq thereby risking the very existence of
the Afghan
democracy.
- Concealing the construction of a
Pakistani nuclear
reactor capable of nuclear weapons production from Congress.
- Stubbornly refusing face-to-face
negotiations with
Iran and North Korea despite their repeated requests on the illogical
reasoning
that it would “reward” them for not complying with
our demands.
- Pursuing
a schizophrenic relationship with the United
Nations in which we publicly condemn its inability to accomplish its
goals and
its corruption while denying guaranteed funds & dues payments needed to achieve those goals,
insisting on
internationally unpopular and scientifically unsound
policies (E.g.; no mention
of condoms in AIDS treatment), and refusing to join in international
human
rights policies, treaties, and protocols (International Criminal Court,
Kyoto
Protocol, Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, Biological and Toxic
Weapons
Convention, International Flow of Illicit Small Arms 2001, Land Mine
Treaty
1997, International Plan for Cleaner Energy, UN Convention on the Law
of the
Sea, 1982 and the 1994 Agreement, Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to
the UN
Convention on Biological Diversity, 2000, World Conference Against
Racism,
Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, September
2001,
Continuing a 39-year-old illegal U.S. embargo against Cuba strengthened
by
Bush, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966),
Convention
on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, UN
Convention
on the Rights of the Child, Cairo Action Plan, and the American
Servicemember's
Protection Act to name a
few either initiated or continued by the Bush administration).
Catering to Big Business
at the
expense of working people and the environment by:
- Appointing unqualified corporate
shills (read "lobbyist") to head
government oversight agencies with whose entire raison ‘de
terre they disagree.
- Providing billions of dollars of
‘corporate welfare’
to oil, gas, coal, tobacco, automobile, manufacturing, and other
corporations
that use that money to reduce worker’s benefits, outsource
their jobs, and
increase corporate profits & CEO benefits,
- Supporting legislation designed
to open public lands,
our National Parks, and resources to exploitation at cut-rate prices
and with
no, or minimal, benefit to the public.
- Refusing - repeatedly - to raise
the minimum wage to
a livable level,
- Supporting legislation to
protect corporations from
legal redress for pollution, tax-evasion, and employee abuse.
- Supporting legislation and court
actions that work to
destroy the power and unity of labor unions to further the
profit-making goals
of big business.
- Supporting legislation that
penalizes debtors and
made it harder to declare bankruptcy while doing nothing to lower the
living
costs creating those debts.
- Supporting legislation against
net neutrality and for
media conglomeration that consolidates mass communications in the hands
of an
elite few with the narrow interest of maximizing profits and who will
espouse
whatever politics serve that end with the resultant loss of local
independent
input and of minority voices.
- Removing laws that protect
government & industry
“whistleblowers” thus protecting ongoing malfeasance
while punishing honesty.
- Siding with insurance companies
to limit malpractice
and other tort compensation such as workplace liability.
- Failing to regulate and demand
legislation to lower
pharmaceutical prices for Medicare Part D.
- Trying to privatize Social
Security in order to
benefit a wealthy few while failing to constructively address the real
issues
facing those approaching retirement.
- Failing to re-direct an American
economy so dependent
on the production of military goods & services that it will
fail unless
U.S. military action and arms sales continue at their current level -
essentially precluding peace - all to insure the continued existence
and
profits of a bloated national “defense” arms
industry.
- Being so intertwined with the
corporations given
reconstruction contracts in Iraq that they could get away with shoddy
work,
undelivered contractual promises, and untold billions of dollars of war
profiteering because to investigate them would have brought the
administration
and its partisan no-bid contract awards into question.
- Outsourcing critical U.S.
security operations (ports
management and military-security operations) to businesses with
questionable
qualifications (Dubai Ports, Blackwater, etc.).
- Privatizing U.S. Governmental
functions. E.g.: Tax Collection.
Violating
historical American social
values by:
- Advocating authoritarianism and
extremism in our
domestic and international relationships thus breaking down the norms
of civil
& political interactions.
- Failing to care for the poor and
dispossessed by
failing both in preparation and aftercare, especially the Gulf Coast
Hurricane
victims.
- Continuing to prosecute a
so-called “War on Drugs”
that has failed to attack or redress the root causes of drug abuse
(poverty,
illiteracy, hopelessness, and racism) but has succeeded in
criminalizing a
generation of African-American men and is going to do the same to
Latinos
while, at the same time, has extended our military penetration and
control into
Latin American countries inflaming their populations against us.
- Consciously conflating their
administration as the
political manifestation of Christianity in order to validate a
political
agenda.
- Pursuing a policy of global
militarization with the
self-evident goal of global American hegemony (a so-called
“pax-Americana”)
with, or without, the consent of those affected in order to monopolize
a
shrinking supply of fossil fuel and other natural resources.
- Allowing and assisting the
corruption of Jack
Abramoff, Tom DeLay, and others in creating virtual female slave-labor
colonies
(including contractually bound mandatory abortions - despite their
’pro-life’
stance) in the U.S. Marianas so “Made In the
U.S.A.” labels can be applied for
the benefit of U.S. and Chinese manufacturing concerns.
- Turning the American political
system into a childish
game of sound-bite “gotcha” moments, deliberately
“framing” arguments to avoid
discussing them in substantive terms but, instead, conflating them with
unrelated
or tangential issues, unfairly demonizing its critics while
remaining
steadfast in ignoring corruption and hypocrisy within their own party
all to
achieve one goal - complete dominance of the American political process
in
order to advance their narrow authoritarian agenda.
- Instituting the politics of fear
rather than rational
discourse into the national political discussion.
- Supervising the subversion of
the electoral process
by trying to re-institute various voting “tests”
such as voter I.D.s and by
failing to insure a reliable voting process in favor of error-ridden
electronic
voting machines provided by partisan contractors.
- Denying and subverting science
to further their
pro-corporate and religious agendas.
- Tolerating the insertion of
American propaganda into
reputedly neutral U.S. and Iraqi news outlets.
- Defunding the
Veteran’s Administration thus depriving
our past & current veterans of guaranteed benefits and
stripping an entire
generation of war-injured veterans of Iraq & Afghanistan of
healthcare they
will desperately require causing them to rely on private care mainly at
their
expense.
- Intentionally creating funding
shortages (“Starving
the Beast”) in order to cut back on social service
entitlements like children’s
health care, full-service women’s clinics, indigent pre-natal
care, Medicaid,
homeless shelters, and much more by creating an artificial
‘lack’ of
funds. The
so-called “YOYO” policy (You’re
On Your Own).
- Failing to provide a system of
healthcare that allows
all Americans to access reasonably priced healthcare rather than the
vastly
more expensive alternative of emergency care in extremis.
- Diverting public funds from
failing public schools
into private schools of dubious quality and, often, with religious
requirements
at odds with the 1st Amendment to the
Constitution.
- Supporting teaching religious
doctrine to children as
though it were scientific fact instead of teaching scientific fact
regarding
issues as diverse as Evolution, American History, and Health.
- Mandating religious doctrine
rather than scientific
data into healthcare choices regarding women’s healthcare,
choice,
contraception, and STD protection.
- Attempting to mandate the
insertion
of religious doctrine
into the life and death choices faced by people dealing with their
beloved
relatives by legal decree.
Intentionally
engaging
in deception
and fostering divisiveness by:
- Supporting the extreme position
of the NRA and
failing to control the widespread availability of handguns and assault weapons in this
country.
- Evading the intent of laws
passed by Congress through
the use of “signing statements”.
- Evading lawful Congressional
oversight of
controversial appointees by use of recess appointments.
- Dismantling the
Government’s Civil Rights division
and, perversely, using it to defend challenges to affirmative action.
- For tolerating and advancing
lies about the death of
Pat Tillman and other U.S. servicemen killed under circumstances that
would
detract from the Administration’s pro-war stance.
- Failing to exercise leadership
when GOP-led and
funded groups (e.g.; Swift Boat Veterans for
“Truth”) engaged in vicious
character assassination and outright lies from which the Administration
benefited.
- Continuing to interfere in the electoral processes
of Latin American nations to a degree that is illegal for any other
nation to
do in the U.S.
- Appointing religious &
political ideologues to
the Supreme Court and to life-long Federal Court positions with the
avowed
intent of altering the social structure of our country under the
false-flag of
“strict constructionism“.
- Demonizing segments of society
(feminists, GLBT,
immigrant, non-Judeo-Christians, and others) in an attempt to fragment
Americans into a “them” and
“us” society (“Divide and
Conquer”).
While
all these items are clear-cut mandates for "regime change" in
Washington, accomplished through the electoral process, they are not -
as I understand it and as awful as indeed they are - cause for
impeachment.
Some
may be (and probably are) cause for criminal or civil action
(including international jurisdictions)
against the President, Vice-President, and members of their
administration.
Nonetheless,
they probably do not add up to the degree of malfeasance needed to
qualify for impeachment.
...So, what ARE
the reasons to President Bush and Vice-President Cheney?
